This Week @ blockbuster.co.uk 14/05/2012

There’s something for everyone this week at blockbuster.co.uk, from romping, rollicking adventure to scorching Shakespearean drama. Plus we’ve not one, not even two, but three incredible exclusives to offer you, a trio of movies you won’t find anywhere else but right here: punch-drunk sports comedy Goon, sweeping costume biopic W.E. and a magnetic, magnificent, modern take on the Bard’s Coriolanus from director and star Ralph Fiennes. Read on, Macduff!
A winning sports comedy with a sledgehammer wit, this outrageous real-life biopic of hockey scrapper Doug Glatt stars American Pie’s Seann William Scott as a violent loser who finds a home among the misfits of a semi-pro hockey team. Combining his ability to take a punch with his passion for giving them, Glatt’s secret weapon is his unexpected charm. Co-starring Jay Baruchel, Eugene Levy and the ever-awesome Liev Schreiber, this is a great guilty pleasure from Michael Dowse, the director of It’s all Gone Pete Tong. Rent it now on Blu-ray and DVD, in store and online from blockbuster.co.uk.
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows
An expensive blend of elaborate production design, rough-and-ready humour and cheekily modern action sequences (free-running Cossack, anyone?) with a champion double act in the middle, besides the never-ending pleasures of the Robert Downey Jr/Jude Law experience, this second Guy Ritchie Holmes adventure sees Mad Men’s Jared Harris, the esteemed son of Richard, giving our dynamic duo no end of grief as marvellous Moriarty, Sherlock’s arch-nemesis and mental equal. A bawdy, rowdy adventure guaranteed to please all fans of the first, it’s a colourful, spirited, inventive romp. Rent the Blu-ray and DVD right now, exclusively from your local Blockbuster store. Online subscribers can print off this voucher and rent it in store.
This fourth instalment of the resilient fantasy franchise is arguably the best of the lot, a serviceably slick shoot-‘em-up with vampires on one side, werewolves on the other and humans in the middle. Beautiful Kate Beckinsale returns to the series after a short break, and it’s a pleasure to see her back, kicking ass with the best of them, wrapped in shiny leather like some S&M Christmas present. Exciting, even spooky, and with great special effects, Underworld: Awakening is lots of fun. Buy or rent it now on Blu-ray and DVD, in store and online from blockbuster.co.uk.
Jonah Hill plays an irresponsible slacker coaxed into babysitting three troublesome kids in this raucous comedy from David Gordon Green, the director of Pineapple Express. Crude, edgy and hilarious with a game supporting cast including Sam Rockwell and Curb Your Enthusiasm’s J.B. Smoove, this is fearless, outrageous entertainment. Buy or rent it now on Blu-ray and DVD, in store and online from blockbuster.co.uk.
The tale of a great Roman hero (director Ralph Fiennes) whose hatred of the common man sees him banished from his homeland, entering into a vengeful partnership with his sworn enemy (Gerard Butler) and marching on Rome, much to the horror of his Machiavellian mum (Vanessa Redgrave), this is a vital screen adaptation of Shakespeare’s savage drama. While the meat and potatoes of Shakey’s language remain intact, the movie’s modern-day setting and sensibilities render it far more relevant and relatable than it otherwise might have been. Powerfully made and memorably played, Coriolanus is available now on Blu-ray and DVD, in store and online, exclusively from blockbuster.co.uk.
From director, producer and co-writer Madonna comes this sumptuous screen take on the scandalous relationship between home-wrecking socialite and Nazi sympathiser Wallis Simpson (Andrea Riseborough) and Shame-of-the-Nation quitter, King Edward VIII (James D’Arcy). In order to give the movie a more contemporary vibe, Madge mirrors their story with that of a modern, disconnected socialite (Abbie Cornish) whose marriage to an over-achieving love rat hurls her into the arms of a Russian security guard. A treat for the eyes and ears alike, W.E. is available now on Blu-ray and DVD, in store and online, exclusively from blockbuster.co.uk.
