We’re delighted to tell you that after several difficult weeks, BLOCKBUSTER UK has been bought by Gordon Brothers Europe. Here is the press release that was released a few moments ago.

TS 1973 Investment Holdings Limited, a subsidiary of global private equity and investment company Gordon Brothers Europe, today announces the acquisition of the business and assets of Blockbuster Entertainment Ltd and Blockbuster GB Ltd.

The 264 stores across the UK and Channel Islands will continue to operate on a ‘business as usual’ basis saving over 2,000 British jobs. The deal will see substantial investment from Gordon Brothers Europe, which intends to fully utilise the existing trading platform, powerhouse brand and extensive customer database. The company will focus on enhancing the customer experience through the use of new product offerings, new technologies and better basic retailing helping Blockbuster become a viable business once again.

Last month Gordon Brothers Europe lent its global expertise to improve the trading position of the ailing Republic fashion chain driving a 2.5 times increase in sales, whilst maintaining a stable margin that facilitated a going concern trade sale.

Former HMV UK and Ireland Commercial Director Gary Warren has been appointed as Managing Director of Blockbuster. With over 20 years working in the retail sector, Warren’s experience also includes a high-powered role at HMV North America and Canada, as Vice President of Operations and Product from 2001 – 2005.

Commenting on the acquisition, Frank Morton, CEO of Gordon Brothers Europe said: “We are delighted to announce the acquisition of Blockbuster. We acknowledge the industry is in transition; we know that we have a challenge ahead but there is still a market to be served. Blockbuster has a strong brand affinity and we believe that with the right mix of new product offering, new technologies, strategic management and marketing, we can bring new life to this high street staple.

We look forward to working with employees, suppliers, landlords and other stakeholders to make this happen.

Today we’re delighted to announce the launch of Click & Collect at the Blockbuster Online Store. As many of you know, we’ve had Click & Collect for rental for a couple of years now and this has become a staple of many of our regular customer’s Blockbuster Experience. Now, with the introduction of Click & Collect for the movies and games you buy online, you can get the prices you see online, in your local BLOCKBUSTER store – online prices on the High Street!

Click & Collect when you buy is a great way to GUARANTEE that you get what you want, when you want for the price you want. You can Click & Collect in any of our nearly 300 BLOCKBUSTER stores. Whether you wish to pick up a title that is already out, or place a preorder for a big release that you’d like to collect from your local BLOCKBUSTER, we’ve got all you want to see or play and more.

To Click & Collect online is really simple – you simply ‘Buy’ or ‘Preorder’ online as per usual and choose Click & Collect when you checkout. We have thousands of titles for you to choose from both online and in your local BLOCKBUSTER. You can also preorder titles that we may not normally stock in your local BLOCKBUSTER (due to size constraints), but we will send it to your store especially for you.

We’ll send you a confirmation email when your order is ready for collection, confirming that you have already paid online, so you can simply visit your store at your leasure and pick up your title. It’s quick, easy and means that you can benefit from some of the best online prices, in your local BLOCKBUSTER store.

And remember, if you preorder at blockbuster.co.uk, you are also covered by our Preorder Guarantee – meaning if the price changes after you order online at blockbuster.co.uk, you will only pay the lowest price. So in other words, after you order, if we do a deal of the day and lower the price – you will only pay this deal of the day price, even if it goes up again soon after. A great way to get the most bang for your buck!

Visit our Online Store to place your order >>

Rental Click & Collect
Reserve what you’d like to watch tonight, the store will put this to one side for you and reply within an hour. You can then take your reservation number into store with you and rent as per usual. A great way for you to GUARANTEE your great night in.

So thrilled are we by the arrival of March’s BLOCKBUSTER Magazine, like newly-minted dads we’d hand you all cigars, if only that were somehow possible. Instead we’ll just gush about it for a while, starting with the basics: available to download for the iDevice in your hands, it’s awesome and won’t cost you a penny. Now let’s get down to cases…

With Awards Season largely behind us and heaps of fresh BAFTAs, Critics’ Circle Awards, Critics’ Choice Awards, Screen Actor’s Guild Awards, Independent Spirit Awards, Golden Globes, Razzies and Oscars dispensed to mostly worthy ‘recipients’, we can relax for a few months, take a break from watching film folk thanking God, Harvey Weinstein and their dead parents, and focus until the process begins anew on what actually matters: watching movies.

This month alone there’s so much filmy goodness to enjoy, from Affleck’s awesome Argo to O. Russell’s transcendent Silver Linings Playbook, we’re like kids in a candy store, geeks in a comicbook shop and, according to EU obesity reports, Brits in a chip shop.

Word-wise we’ve covered the bases with reviews of everything filmic and gamey. Swinging by for a chat this month is the artist formerly known as the male end of Bennifer and the artist currently known as Game of Thrones’ Peter Dinklage. Plus we’ve pulled an interview from the archives to pay tribute to our old friend Richard Briers. Elsewhere we pay tribute to the maddest mums the movies ever saw and look ahead to the top ten most exciting sci fi and fantasy films of 2013.

For lovers of less passive digital entertainment, we set our sights this ish on everything from impending DC slugger Injustice: Gods Among Us to scorching sci fi blast-‘em-up Gears of War: Judgment. Plus we’ve the skinny on the next gen of console fun from Sony and Microsoft.

You’d best get downloading then, and crack out your swiping finger because these pages aren’t going to read themselves. Unless you have an app for that, of course.

Click here to download March’s BLOCKBUSTER MAGAZINE.

As you know, it’s been quite an eventful time for BLOCKBUSTER. However, we have recently added a load of new features to Blockbuster By Post that we’d like to let you know about.

10% OFF EVERYTHING YOU BUY
As a Blockbuster By Post subscriber you can now get 10% off everything you buy all the time at our BLOCKBUSTER® Marketplace.

There are thousands of titles to choose from and you can make great savings when compared to buying new. You don’t need a code, to paraphrase Liam Neeson in ‘Taken’, we know you are! All you need to do is login to the Blockbuster Marketplace using your Blockbuster By Post details and everything you add to your basket will get 10% off.

Check out the Blockbuster Marketplace >>

SWAP IN-STORE
Looking for a movie at the last minute? You can now return the discs you rent online at Blockbuster By Post for movies from your local BLOCKBUSTER store. 1,000s movies are FREE, everything else is HALF PRICE!

You don’t even have to exchange a disc to get half price movie rentals. You can get these on any movie in your local BLOCKBUSTER store.

All you need to do is link up your Blockbuster By Post account with your in-store rental account, wait 24 hours. Then whenever a movie is scanned through your in-store rental account, it will come back at the discounted rate.

Remember you can Click & Collect as well – GUARANTEE your Blockbuster night!

And while you may have heard of our recently announced store closures, there are still hundreds of BLOCKBUSTER stores left across the UK that are trading and open as normal.

Link up your BLOCKBUSTER Store and Blockbuster By Post accounts here >>

GUARANTEE WHAT YOU GET

We launched Top Ticket a few years ago, but we completely admit that we perhaps don’t tell enough people about this awesome service.

At Blockbuster By Post, we are the only service to offer you a numbered list so you can tell us exactly what you want first. But there are times where we fail to give you your top choice – and for this we are very sorry. Like all online rental services, it all depends on the availability in the warehouse when your discs arrive back to swap for more.

However with Blockbuster By Post, life doesn’t have to be like a box of chocolates – you can GUARANTEE what you get next. Every month, we give you Top Ticket credits that you can use as part of your service.

Thanks first of all for all for the continued support we have received from our staff and our customers. We will do what we can to keep everyone in the loop. We continue to receive a high volume of emails and calls from the recent announcement that BLOCKBUSTER entered administration that we are working our way through. We apologise for any delay.

In the meantime, with the help of our administrators who are fielding most of our customer queries, we have compiled the most frequently asked questions below:

What will happen to my Blockbuster By Post subscription?

It is the Joint Administrators’ intention to continue to trade the business as usual whilst in administration. As a valued Blockbuster By Post subscriber, please be assured that the Blockbuster By Post service will continue to operate as normal.

Should trading cease, you will be refunded the outstanding balance on that month’s subscription, on a pro-rated basis, before your subscription is cancelled.

I’ve pre-ordered from you online, will my pre-order be honoured?

We will endeavour to honour all pre-orders placed online at blockbuster.co.uk or the Blockbuster Marketplace. Please be assured that as per usual, we will not charge you for your pre-order until the item is due to be dispatched to you. In the unlikely event that we cannot fulfil your pre-order, you will not be charged. We will aim to let you know in good time so you can place your order elsewhere.

I have joined VIP GAMER, can I use my points?

Yes indeed. Please login to your VIP GAMER dashboard as usual, you can redeem your points, swapping them for discounts to use online or in-store. Please note, we have suspended the earning of points on VIP GAMER.

Log In to VIP GAMER here >>

I have a coupon code for Blockbuster Marketplace, can I still use this online?

Yes. Please note that there may be a minimum spend required in order for this to be used online. Please enter this when prompted at checkout.

SUBSCRIPTION RENTAL

I would like to cancel my Blockbuster By Post subscription.

I would like a break / holiday from my Blockbuster By Post subscription.

It is the Joint Administrators’ intention to continue to trade the business as usual whilst in administration. As a valued Blockbuster By Post subscriber, please be assured that the Blockbuster By Post service will continue to operate as normal.

If you still wish to cancel:

You could always take a break from the service for a while – you will not be charged for the service and can restart in a few weeks or months.

If would like to take a Payment Holiday, please click here >>
If you would still like to cancel your account, please click here >>

I haven’t received my next Blockbuster By Post disc?

My Blockbuster By Post disc is faulty.

I’ve exchanged a disc in store, however it hasn’t been checked in yet.

While most discs should arrive the next day, the Royal Mail’s official line is to allow 1-4 days for 1st class post to arrive.

Please go to blockbuster.co.uk and click ‘Log In’ in the top right hand corner. Click on ‘Report a problem’ next to the title that is faulty / you haven’t received. Please follow the on-screen instructions as usual. A replacement will be sent asap.

Log In to blockbuster.co.uk here >>

I haven’t got the top title on my list

Like all By Post services, Blockbuster will send the first available title in your list to ensure that you always have something to watch. If you wish to guarantee what you get next, you can choose a Top Ticket. Your Top Ticket will be sent to you immediately. Please see the Top Ticket sections at blockbuster.co.uk for more information.

Choose a Top Ticket here >>

I haven’t received anything from Blockbuster By Post (nothing has been sent)

Blockbuster recommend that you always have 20-30 titles in your list at all time to avoid an uninterrupted service. If nothing has been sent, then it is possible that all the copies of the titles on your list are out on rent to other customers.

In the meantime, we recommend that you use Top Ticket – these are titles that can be sent to you immediately. We can get a disc out usually within 24 hours. Nearly 90% of the catalogue is available on Top Ticket right now and you can guarantee what you get.

Choose a Top Ticket here >>

My payment has failed / I need to update my debit or credit card

You can update these online, please log in here and follow the on-screen instructions >>

I need to update my address details / email address.

You can update these online, please log in here and follow the on-screen instructions >>

I’ve forgotten my password

Please enter your email address here and Blockbuster will email you a reminder.

Request Password Reminder >>

I’ve chosen a Top Ticket by mistake, how do I cancel this?

We’re very sorry, but as soon as you select something as your Top Ticket, the disc is put to one side at the Blockbuster warehouse and is readied for dispatch to you. Blockbuster does this to guarantee that you get this title sent to you next.

Unfortunately we can’t stop this from being dispatched to you.

I get eVouchers / eCoupons as part of my monthly subscription / Rental Plan however my store has closed.

We recommend that you downgrade your Blockbuster By Post subscription to be online only. You can do this online, log in here and choose an alternative rental plan.

Change your Blockbuster By Post Plan >>

No one does Tarantinoesque quite like the original Quentin, a man whose love for cult Seventies cinema routinely manifests itself into polarising movie events. His films are so stylised and extreme, so deliberately written and knowingly shot, you have no choice but to love them or hate them. There is no middle ground.

Me, I love them AND I hate them. They’re thrilling and disappointing, hilarious and tedious, ingenious and derivative, sublime and obnoxious, all at once. This is true of virtually all his work and Django Unchained (18) is no exception.

A comic spaghetti western with plenty of red sauce, the film tells the tale of a slave named Django (Jamie Foxx) who is freed by a charismatic bounty hunter in order to help him track down a trio of brothers wanted alive or preferably dead. In turn, our unchained hero takes to killing white folk for money, and once he and his mischievous mentor (Christoph Waltz) are firm friends, they set out to rescue Django’s indentured wife (Kerry Washington), currently the property of a sordid Southern scoundrel (Leonardo DiCaprio) who organises to-the-death slave fights.

There is much violence, choreographed with gusto and delivered with glee. There are speeches, epic stretches of dialogue in love with itself, much of it as clever as it thinks it is. There are cameos and movie in-jokes, so many you could watch it purely as a geek trivia quiz, noting the endless references. In addition, as expected, there’s a crazy soundtrack of oddball oldies and film so grainy and drenched with oversaturated colour that you’re almost dirty from the depicted dusty trail.

Then there are the performances. Big ones. Huge, scenery chewing beasts that cannot be stopped. Another cracker from Waltz, Inglourious Basterds Oscar-winning Nazi and already a Golden Globe-winner for his educated dentist turned killer of bad men. By far the smartest man in every room he’s in, the pleasure he takes in endlessly outwitting everyone is palpable and contagious.

Foxx too is a pleasure to watch as he slowly comes out of his shell, a timid bug of a man at the start who slowly transforms into a leather clad butterfly of vengeful death. Then there’s little Leo, twisting his charm into something dripping with evil honey. And Samuel L. Jackson, simply outrageous as the squawking head of Leo’s nightmarish household. It’s a freakshow, to be sure, and everyone’s very confident and chatty.

From the opening seconds I was instantly won over by Django Unchained, but it’s a movie that abuses every ounce of your good will. Mostly because it is self-indulgently, endlessly long. Every speech needs clipping. Every scene requires a hefty edit. You want to shout at the screen, “I get it. Move on.”

By the beginning of the film’s third hour, it has already outstayed its welcome, and when all 165 minutes are finally done, all you are is relieved. Because for all its lively, winky, irreverent stylings, it’s like a house guest you initially find amusing, but one you soon tire of when he refuses to go home. And the things you originally enjoyed about him became the things that eventually annoy you the most.

But… if you’re patient and willing to forgive the movie’s excesses, if you’re passionate about your Tarantino and westerns are additionally your thing, you may very well adore Django Unchained down to its grimy cotton socks.

An inspirational true tale that recommends we seize the day, and one another, The Sessions (15) is an indie sweetheart with so much warmth, good humour and humanity, it would be impossible not to be won over by it. Though the subject matter is challenging, there’s a surprising lightness to the way it’s handled by writer/director Ben Lewin, who gives his talented cast the tools they require to fashion something intimate, precious and beautiful.

John Hawkes takes the lead as a mentally vivacious thirtysomething man in an iron lung who wants to lose his virginity. Though entirely immobile, there is still one part of his body that works, and with the help of professional sex surrogate Helen Hunt, he aims to put it to good use. Shamefully, Hawkes was passed over this year for Oscar recognition, even though his performance is one of the most beguiling I’ve ever seen in a film. What matters most, I suppose, is the movie got made and is now available for your viewing pleasure. So go ahead. View.

We’ve got a couple of cracking crime films for you this week, the first a period thriller about honourable bootleggers battling crooked coppers, the second a futuristic actioner about a judge, jury and executioner type who saves the world, one ultra-violent slaying at a time. Brilliant!

Lawless

A traditional American crime story about the good men who break the law and the monsters who enforce it, well told from an off-centre perspective with style, substance and plenty of personality, Lawless tells the true, prohibition-era tale of a moonshine-fuelled trio of bootlegging brothers who live, not in the big city, but the mountains of Franklin County, Virginia.

Big fish in a small pond, the lads run the gamut from indomitable and imposing (Tom Hardy) to runty yet ambitious (Shia LaBeouf), and by god, when a despicable Special Deputy (Guy Pearce) appears from Chicago with a mind to dip into their profits, an escalating battle of wills ensues that can only end in tears.

Written by musician Nick Cave and directed by indified Aussie John Hillcoat, who collaborated previously on hella cool western The Proposition, the movie’s based on fact and certainly seems authentic. From the roar of the Tommy guns to the dust on our anti-heroes’ worn boots, Lawless transports you to a colourful time and troublesome place of countrified thrills, world weary romance and brutal, blood-spitting violence.

Blessed with a standout performance from Pearce, who should only ever really play bad guys as he’s so damn good at it, and a memorable, featured cameo by Gary Oldman as a big city gangster, the movie’s tight, compelling and pacy with a finely folksy, acoustic soundtrack to boot. Buy or rent it now on Blu-ray or DVD, in store or online from blockbuster.co.uk.

Dredd

Pitch black and bloody with a red, raw edge, Dredd marks cinema’s second attempt to capture the inflexible stylings of the gruffest, toughest, judge, jury and executioner to ever patrol the urban wastelands of Mega City One. Karl Urban grimaces to perfection in a gritty sci fi actioner reminiscent of The Raid, as Dredd and psychic rookie Judge Anderson (Olivia Thirlby) hit a hulking, wretched tower block in search of psychotic, designer drug-dealing gang leader Ma-Ma (Lena Headey). There will be blood… Buy or rent it now on Blu-ray or DVD, in store or online from blockbuster.co.uk.
