From the musical offerings of Katie Perry to the shoot-Santa-in-the-face antics of Messrs Harold and Kumar, we’ve got a little bit of everything for you this week at blockbuster.co.uk. Between the past and the end of the world, via crazy aliens and the exclusive stripping stylings of chiselled beefcake Channing Tatum, your bases are well and truly covered, so come and explore.

Magic Mike

A smooth, naturalistic portrait of the barely dressed and lightly educated, Magic Mike is a sparsely plotted but heftily characterised tale of male strippers and their empty, aimless and loveless yet hedonistically unparalleled lives. Love them, hate them, judge them, envy them: It’s all good.

Of course there’s also lots of oiled, gyrating man-flesh on display in this frequently amusing, sporadically dramatic and lightly romantic feature from director Steven Soderbergh, here putting his trademark blend of Hollywood slick, indie cool and arty introspection to entertaining good use.

Playing an easily confused thirty year-old stripper with delusions of an entrepreneurial future, Channing Tatum is perfectly cast in a role that requires him to repeatedly and rhythmically thrust his crotch at every passing close-up. Equally diverting is young British buck Alex Pettyfer as a callow youth taken under our hero’s sweaty wing and plunged into a wild and dangerous world of sex, drugs and g-strings.

Also playing a part in this perils-of-the-fast-line tale is Matthew McConaughey, both physically and emotionally exposed as a veteran stripper who runs the club where much of the action unfolds. Outrageous and enlightening with smirk-worthy moments to spare, Magic Mike is solid, soapy fun. Buy or rent it now on Blu-ray and DVD, in store or online, exclusively from blockbuster.co.uk.

Men in Black 3

From director Barry Sonnenfeld comes the nostalgic return of cheeky J (Will Smith) and craggy K (Tommy Lee Jones) as a vengeful, alien outlaw (Jemaine Clement) forces our odd couple heroes to travel through time. A pleasing blend of lively action, swinging production design and witty banter with a scene stealing performance from Josh Brolin as a younger, lighter K. If you’re a Blockbuster by post customer and can’t wait for this In-store Exclusive to become available online, you can rent it for half price, on Blu-ray and DVD, at your local Blockbuster store.

A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas

Kicking Xmas up the butt, shooting Santa in the face and ho-ho-hoing their way through their third outrageous adventure, stoner pals Harold (John Cho) and Kumar (Kal Penn), along with twisted acquaintance Neil Patrick Harris, are hilariously inappropriate throughout. “You have a good job, you make good money, and you don’t beat your wife,” says Kumar to Harold. “What more could a Latino father-in-law ask for?” A film so fast and freakin’ funny, you don’t even have to be wasted to enjoy it. If you’re a Blockbuster by post customer and can’t wait for this In-store Exclusive to become available online, you can rent it for half price, on Blu-ray and DVD, at your local Blockbuster store.

Seeking a Friend For the End of the World

A pre-apocalyptic romcom road movie about two likeable losers who make a meaningful connection prior to the apocalypse, this stars Steve Carell and Keira Knightley, finding love and laughs where you’d think there’d be none. Offbeat and sweet with great chemistry between the leads and some interesting ideas that are cleverly explored. Buy or rent it now on Blu-ray and DVD, in store or online from blockbuster.co.uk.

Katy Perry – Part of Me

A sunny, snappy concert movie with an access-all-areas backstage pass, this includes candid chats with Perry’s friends and family, also the girl herself, a genuine and likeable sort who belts out her hits in a procession of wacky, colourful costumes. Definitely worth a watch and a listen. If you’re a Blockbuster by post customer and can’t wait for this In-store Exclusive to become available online, you can rent it for half price, on Blu-ray and DVD, at your local Blockbuster store.
