Margin Call

Exclusively this week, we’re thrilled to offer you a pair of proper, grown up movies, namely financial thriller Margin Call and sophisticated romcom Friends With Kids. Beyond which, as Halloween fast approaches, we have lots of agreeably silly and exceedingly bloody treats for you to enjoy. From the undead antics of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter to the mocking comedy of Cockneys vs Zombies, we can’t be beat for frightful fun!

Margin Call

A complex, all-star drama revolving around key players at an investment bank in the run up to the financial crisis, Margin Call tells an intensely-detailed yet equally well characterised 24-hour tale that reveals the sort of backstage shenanigans that led to the recession we’re currently suffering through.

Thoughtfully written and directed by first-time feature maker J.C. Chandor, whose father worked for over thirty years with Merrill Lynch, the movie offers insights both fascinating and terrifying, and helps guide us through the intricate ins-and-outs of worldwide banking. Cracking cast too, a truly stellar line-up that includes Kevin Spacey, Paul Bettany and  Stanley Tucci. Rent it now on Blu-ray and DVD, in store and online, exclusively from blockbuster.co.uk.

Friends With Kids

From Jennifer Westfeldt, the co-writer and star of 2001’s Kissing Jessica Stein, comes this amusing, Woody Allenish romcom, once again written by and starring Westfeldt, who this time tries her hand at directing too.

The tale of two reasonably attractive, urbane and smartly cynical best friends, one played by Jen and the other by Step Brothers’ Adam Scott, who attempt to have and raise a child without all that love and relationship nonsense getting in the way, it’s an easy watch with lots of laughs and a fair degree of indie sophistication. Rent it now on Blu-ray and DVD, in store and online, exclusively from blockbuster.co.uk.

Red Lights

A smart psychological thriller with a Seventies vibe, Red Lights comes from the Spanish director of Buried, Rodrigo Cortes, and tells the twisty-turny tale of paranormal investigators (Sigourney Weaver and Cillian Murphy) who set their minds on exposing a celebrity psychic (Robert De Niro) as a fraud. With a great cast and interesting stylings, this tells a sometimes shocking tale with real drive and class. Buy or rent it now on Blu-ray and DVD, in store and online from blockbuster.co.uk.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

A lively and deeply loopy historical fang-fest from Wanted’s Timur Bekmambetov, this sees Honest Abe (Benjamin Walker) declaring Civil War on the southern undead, with slo-mo axe slashes aplenty. Two action sequences stand out, one a fight set among a herd of stampeding horses and the other, a more traditional, train-set battle on burning tracks. Add mates, beer and enjoy. If you’re a Blockbuster by post customer and can’t wait for this In-store Exclusive to become available online, you can rent it for half price, on Blu-ray and DVD, at your local Blockbuster store.

Chernobyl Diaries

Tourists who venture where they shouldn’t are terrorised by angry mutant things in this intense and brutal shocker. Keen to go off the beaten path, vacationers hire an ‘extreme’ tour guide, exploring an abandoned city where they soon find themselves stranded. And they are not alone… An efficient low budget survival horror thriller, this’ll get your heart pumping and no mistake. Buy or rent it now on Blu-ray and DVD, in store and online from blockbuster.co.uk.

Dark Tide

Halle Berry takes the lead in this toothsome thriller about an open water diver whose history with great white sharks is complicated, to say the least. Forced by circumstance to lead a group dive into the depths of Shark Alley, the world’s deadliest feeding ground, a deadly storm and gang of hungry Jaws wannabes ensure that Berry and her entourage wish they’d stayed at home. A fun suspenser with plenty of bite, Dark Tide is available to buy and rent on Blu-ray and DVD, in store and online from blockbuster.co.uk.

Resident Evil: Damnation

The ever-growing Resident Evil franchise delivers its second feature-length animation, a follow-up to its first, Resident Evil: Degeneration. Sent on a mission to an Eastern European country torn apart by civil war, US agent Leon Kennedy investigates the rumour that Bio Organic Weapons are being used in the conflict, with predictably nasty yet thrilling results. Better suited to ‘toons than live action, the Res Evil universe comes alive in this jumpy, blood-soaked, action-packed monster mash. Buy or rent it now on Blu-ray and DVD, in store and online from blockbuster.co.uk.

Cockneys vs Zombies

A cheeky low budget zomcom starring Michelle Ryan and a host of familiar faces, this barmy British effort follows the flagging fortunes of a hapless gang of wannabe bank robbers who stumble upon an ancient vault full of ravenous zombies. Equipped with all the guns and ammo they can carry, it’s up to the gang to save the East End from the walking dead. As silly as it sounds, with lots of gags and gore, Cockneys vs. Zombies is available to buy and rent on Blu-ray and DVD, in store and online from blockbuster.co.uk.
