You want stars? We’ve got stars: Denzel Washington, Ryan Reynolds, Jason Segel, Kristin Scott Thomas… You want exclusives? No problem. We’ve got Safe House, a kick-ass action thriller that you won’t find anywhere else but right here at blockbuster.co.uk. And what’s that you say? You want fart shoes? This really is your lucky day…

Safe House

A slickly produced and fast-paced thriller starring the master of that particular genre, Denzel Washington, Safe House is largely set in Cape Town, South Africa, and certainly benefits from its unusual setting. Playing it straight for once, Ryan Reynolds co-stars as a low-grade CIA type, reduced to babysitting an empty safe house when along comes Washington, Public Enemy Number One, a master manipulator with a microchip full of information that everyone desperately wants.

Following a heavily-armed assault on said safe house by unknown assassins, sole survivors Ryan and Denzel flee for their lives, a rookie agent and his veteran prisoner, trusting no one, seeking answers and fighting everyone, including one another, every step of the way.

Supporting cast members come and go, among them Brendan Gleeson and Vera Farmiga, but the movie belongs to Reynolds and Washington, both of whom give it their all, injecting no end of vigour into their various confrontations, fights and chase scenes. Well made and played with lots of excitement and a fair few surprises besides, Safe House is available to rent on Blu-ray and DVD, in store and online, exclusively from blockbuster.co.uk.

The Muppets

Never mind “They had me at hello”. The Muppets had me 35 years ago. I’ve been a fan since I was small, a loyal devotee of The Great Gonzo and his foamy, largely legless fellow Vaudevillians. When the news reached me, then, that professional nice guy Jason Segel was co-writing a Muppet movie reboot, a film he planned to star in alongside Kermit, Fozzie, Miss Piggy and the rest, I was officially jazzed, ready to surf a wave of nostalgia from my childhood all the way to today, and ready, also, to hook my kids on their disarmingly charming, cornball comedy stylings.

The tale of three all-singing-and-dancing Muppet fans, Gary (Segel), Mary (Amy Adams) and Walter (voiced by puppeteer Peter Linz), who gather the old gang to put on a show and save The Muppet Theatre from a dastardly oil tycoon (Chris Cooper), The Muppets is a bright and cheerful, funny, old-school pleasure.

A good-hearted and affectionate tribute to The Muppets with some audaciously cheesy musical numbers, Fozzie in fart shoes and an Eighties Robot, it’s fine, fuzzy, funky, family fun. Buy or rent it now on Blu-ray and DVD, in store and online from blockbuster.co.uk.

The Woman in the Fifth

A captivating thriller in English and French, this tells the gripping story of a bookish professor who falls for the charms of a mysterious femme fatale. American writer Tom Ricks (Ethan Hawke) comes to Paris desperate to put his life together again and win back the love of his estranged wife and daughter. When things don’t go according to plan, he ends up in a shady hotel in the suburbs, having to work as a night guard to make ends meet.

Then a beautiful stranger (Kristin Scott Thomas) walks into his life and things start looking up. Their passionate and intense relationship, however, triggers a string of inexplicable and dangerous events that threaten both Tom and his daughter, as if an obscure power was taking control of his life…

Directed by BAFTA Award-winner Pawel Pawlikowski (My Summer of Love) and based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Douglas Kennedy, The Woman in the Fifth is a taut and twisty-turny thriller with style and smarts to spare. Rent it now on Blu-ray and DVD, in store and online from blockbuster.co.uk.
