E3 2012 Day 3 Round Up

by bbtom on June 7, 2012

Yesterday saw day 3 of E3 take off, with another day loaded with more stunning screenshots and trailers for some of the most anticipated games around. Right let’s get our teeth stuck into what was shown off.

borderlands2

First up are screenshots from the looter-shooter sequel ‘Borderlands 2′. Borderlands 2 is set 5 years after the events of the first game, where a man named Handsome Jack has taken credit for your actions in opening and exposing the truth of the vault and has since taken over Pandora. Your quest in the game is to kill Handsome Jack and save the vault hunters he has captured (I assume the characters from the first game). Using the same cell shade style of graphics and looking to have the same tongue in cheek humour as the first game, Borderlands 2 looks like it’s going to end up being a fantastic game, I just hope that it has the return of the hilarious Claptrap and Narrator. Borderlands 2 is set for release in stores in September.

Next up is ‘XCOM: Enemy Unknown’, a reimagined reboot of UFO: Enemy Unknown. Set on modern day earth it see’s you take the role of XCOM an elite and scientific military team, sent out to respond to the global invasion. Using a turn based strategy oppose to just run and gun, it’s shaping up to be one of the best games of the year. Oh what’s that? Don’t believe me? Well just check out the trailer below. XCOM: Enemy Unknown is set for release in stores mid October.

Then was saw some screenshots and a trailer for Naughty Dog’s new Playstation exclusive ‘The Last of Us’. Set in a post-apocalyptic Pittsburgh, players will control a character called Joel who is partnered with a 14 year old girl called Ellie. In the game you’ll have to fight for survival and scavenge for supplies in a world that is seemingly out to get you with enemies from other people infected with a mysterious virus to fellow survivors who are just seeming to be out to get you (it’s a dog eat dog world out there.), it is shaping up to be one amazing game with amazing visuals. Keep an eye out for more details on the game soon and it is currently set for release some time in 2013.

Namco Bandai then took some time to release new screens and trailers for a couple of their upcoming games including the usual ‘Tekken’ game and ‘Star Trek’.

Star Trek is set between J.J. Abrams films and boasts the voice talents of Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto (Kirk and Spock). The game has now revealed its enemy – The Gorn (for those of you who aren’t trekkies out there, they are basically nasty lizard-men.). Star Trek is shaping up to be a gem, if done right and is set for release early 2013.

Next Namco showed a trailer off for the game ‘Dragonball Z Kinect’, yep that’s right a Dragonball Z….Kinect game does anyone else predict a lot of broke furniture or lamp shades? The game gives you over 50 characters from the universe to choose from and perform the gestures of there signiture moves using the Kinect. Dragonball Z Kinect is due for release sometime in October.

Meanwhile SEGA gave us more on long awaited and overdue ‘Aliens: Colonial Marines’. Set to be a direct sequel to James Camerson’s ‘Aliens’, it tells us what happened to the Sulaco and see’s us return to the planet LV 426. Having been in development for years (for what seems like a life time for us fans) it’s nice to see trailers and screenshots burst out of the air ducts and bring life and hope to the game. Aliens: Colonial Marines is currenty set for release in February 2013. Let’s wait and see….

Activision slung out a bunch of screenshots and trailers for games including ‘Tony Hawk’s Proskater HD’, which is a mash up of Proskater 1 and 2 but with bigged up and high def graphics to wet the appetite of anyone who misses the old Tony Hawk franchise.

Then it zip lined out a bunch of ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ screenshots and trailers. Set after the events of the upcoming movie and has been in production for the last three years by the studio Beenox. It’s looking to shape up and be a rather spectacular Spider-Man game on par with 2004’s Spider-Man 2 game, which to date is still the best spidey outting on consoles. The Amazing Spider-Man webs up our store shelves on June 29th.

Activision ended of with showing a new CGI trailer for the upcoming (and the game I am most looking forward to this year) ‘Transformers: Fall of Cybertron’. Set after the events of ‘War for Cybertron’ and just before the autonomous robotic organisms arrived on Earth, Fall of Cybertron will lead up to the events that cause them to arrive on Earth. Returning with some familiar characters and even introducing some new (to those who are unfamiliar with Transformers lore) to the game. Fall of Cybertron will be transforming our stores this August.

Now to end this blog with one final thing, a game for which I had convinced myself after years of it being put back over and over, would never come into fruition finally got some new screenshots. That game is Konami’s ‘Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance’ (I really don’t like the name…does anyone else think the same?), seeing cyborg ninja Raiden returning for some hack n’ slash action with his big sword.

Still not sure what to make of it, guess time will tell when more details and footage is released. Either way the screens are pretty to look at and hopefully we can expect to see Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance in stores sometime early 2013 (we hope.).

That’s the gaming news for today, check back tomorrow for the final day of E3’s round up.
