From white-knuckle thrills and critter-based comedy to heartbreaking drama and Hot Tub-themed craziness, there’s something for everyone this week at blockbuster.co.uk. So come on in – the water’s great!
The Ghost Ewan MacGregor plays a savvy ghost writer hired to complete the memoirs of former British Prime Minister Pierce Brosnan in this nail-biting new thriller from master-of-the-art Roman Polanski. Seems the previous ghost writer ended up dead, quite possibly done in, and as Ewan unearths rather more information than is healthy for him, suddenly it appears as if he might go the same way… A classic edge-of-the-seater from Polanski, who at 77 appears to have lost none of his edge or ability, The Ghost offers great performances all round with a compelling plot, arresting visuals and a nerve-wracking Hitchcockian score. Furry Vengeance Family-friendly movie star Brendan Fraser plays the hapless stooge of an evil property developer in sensational slapstick comedy Furry Vengeance, learning the hard way that if you mess with nature it’ll mess with you right back. Co-starring Brooke Shields and a capable cast of critters, it’s laugh-a-minute stuff. Buy or rent the movie now, on Blu-ray and DVD, in store and online from blockbuster.co.uk.
Four Lions What This Is Spinal Tap did for heavy metal and Dr Strangelove did for the Cold War, Four Lions does for the modern face of terrorism. A funny, thrilling comedy with more edge than Dover’s White Cliffs, this incredible British farce from Chris Morris follows the fate of a group of useless, but very human jihadists whose plans to fight the power are hardly of the best-laid variety. With non-stop jokes coming from the characters’ conflicts, excesses and mistakes, Four Lions crackles with wit and tension and understands, at its core, that human beings are innately ridiculous. Buy or rent it now, on Blu-ray and DVD, in store and online from blockbuster.co.uk.
Hot Tub Time Machine An outrageous, hilarious comedy that manages to live up to its pleasingly ridiculous title, Hot Tub Time Machine tells the twisted tale of four friends, unhappy with their lives, who spend a wild, drunken night in a hot tub that magically transports them back in time to the Eighties, where they get the chance to set their lives along happier paths. Starring a cool John Cusack, the reliably obnoxious Rob Corddry and, in a small but welcome role as a mystical repairman, comedy legend Chevy Chase, this is Animal House meets The Butterfly Effect. Crass and silly with some memorable grossout moments and terrific chemistry between the cast. Buy or rent it now on Blu-ray and DVD, in store and online from blockbuster.co.uk.
City of Life and Death From inside a walled, occupied Chinese city comes an unexpectedly vibrant portrait of the tenacity, courage, sacrifice, dignity, communion and love that mark human lives even when they are pushed to the brink by the terror of war. With City of Life and Death, acclaimed Chinese filmmaker Lu Chuan makes his most powerful cinematic statement yet with this emotional war epic that penetrates beyond the battle zone to take an inside journey alongside the city’s people. Set during the 1937 occupation of Nanking by Japanese forces, the film presents a chain of raw, intimate, unforgettable moments that reflect the multiple dimensions and devastating moral choices of life during wartime. Rent it now on Blu-ray and DVD, in store and online from blockbuster.co.uk.

I really enjoyed this political thriller, and that was watching it on a plane, normally the worst place to watch a film. Possibly not as good as 3 days of Condor, but close.
