Dark Shadows Cinemascape pic 2

The world’s a better place for having Tim Burton in it. I’m not saying I love all his films. On the contrary, his Planet of the Apes enraged me and, despite their popularity, I never liked his Batmans. But there are so many more positives to his work. From Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure and Beetlejuice to Ed Wood and Sweeney Todd, Burton has proved himself one of the cinema’s most distinctive stylists, a passionate nerd with the flair of a circus ringmaster. Many of his films I love with a passion, and though sure, imperfections abound in his work, in my book at least, he’s aces.

Dark Shadows (12A)

For better and for worse, Dark Shadows is every inch a Tim Burton production.

Based on a long-running U.S. soap opera that played for five years from 1966 and told the supernatural tale of a New England family beset by vampirism, lycanthropy and black magic, though largely unknown outside of the States, Dark Shadows’ unusual storylines and po-faced clumsiness has long-since earned it cult status and generations of devotees, key among them, Tim Burton. Though I’ve never seen an episode myself, I love the fact that a show like this existed all those years ago, an unlikely hybrid of low budget soapy melodrama and barmy, blood-sucking horror. A decade on from the Beeb-funded phenomena of The League of Gentlemen, though the show’s creators are now familiar sights on our entertainment landscape, stars and scribes of stage and screen with scores of credits to each of their names, I can’t help but yearn for the days of Precious Things. Back in the late Nineties and through much of the early Noughties, when a gang of literate movie nerds got together to create the oddest, funniest and most decidedly British comedy show since Monty Python’s Flying Circus.

By now I expect you’ve seen Avengers Assemble. I hope and expect it was good for you too. Besides receiving an uncommonly warm critical reception, the movie’s opening four-day weekend saw it pull in an astonishing £15.8 million at the box office. Besides scoring the biggest opening ever for a superhero movie in the UK, in its first four days alone it made more money than the entire box office runs of Thor, Captain America and the last solo Hulk put together. Internationally, Avengers Assemble was the number one movie in every one of the 39 countries it opened in. And when it debuts in the States, on Friday May 4, its legend and box office is only going to grow.

joss-whedon-007

With The Cabin in the Woods currently messing with minds up and down the country, and Avengers Assemble thrilling audiences worldwide, I’ve lately spent a fair bit of time focusing on the creator of both: visionary writer/director, king of all media and God of the Geeks Joss Whedon. To my mind, when you think about Whedon, although he’s the man who breathed life into Buffy and Angel and there are plenty of folk who adore him just for that, from my personal point of view, and I know I’m not alone in this, pre-Avengers, he’s the Firefly guy.
